The Muscat d'Alexandrie is fermented on its skins for a week, with a light pigeage (punching down of the cap) for 1 week, before pressing and finishing in neutral French oak barrels. The Muscat Petit Grains is pressed immediately and fermented and aged at 16 degrees in stainless steel vats. Despite the element of skin contact, it is only marginally deeper in hue than you would expect from a traditional dry muscat. And whilst beautifully fragrant, it is less overtly grapey or "Muscaty”, but more"winey” and complex, on both nose and palate. In the mouth, the initial feel is quite dry, with the merest hint of grape tannin, though the flavours of grapefruit, grape and granny smith apple give a perception of sweet fruit on the mid-palate. With just the right amount of acidity, combined with a good deal of wet stone minerality and a long, tangy finish, this really is a delightfully enjoyable and refreshing wine. |
