Semi-opaque blood red/purple core, leading to a narrow ruby rim. A welcome return to the (somewhat) typically more full-bodied style of this cuvée, with aromas of cassis, bramble, black cherry and fine eau de vie, along with a hint of the trademark La Marfée blackcurrant leaf. Further notes of orange peel, garrigue herbs, tobacco and damp earth make for a really quite complex nose. The palate is beautifully balanced and gently savoury/meaty, with sweet-sour black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, herb and soft spice flavours, accompanied by tangy, cherry skin acidity, beautifully ripe tannins and a long, cool, spicy/minty finish. Whilst made for food, it is at the same time refreshing, with a sweet-sour tanginess that makes it easy to drink on its own - though it really demands a juicy rib-eye steak or a creamy mushroom risotto. This may be La Marfée's "entry level" red.... but La Marfée is a seriously good grower - and this is a seriously good wine by anyone's standards. And whilst it is lovely to drink now, it is also worthy of a further 5 to 8 years (or more) of ageing. Biodynamic. |
