From a parcel of vines planted in 1952, on the south-east-facing slopes of the Côte de Py (hence the name).aged 50 years-plus. A medium-hued, semi-translucent blood/cherry red core, with a hint of bricking, fading gently to a narrow pale rim. Notes of black cherry, rhubarb and hints of spice and woodsmoke on the nose. There's no oak influence here, but it is a really rather different expression of Morgon to the "Tradition" cuvée, with more in the way of tangy red fruit flavours (again, red cherry, rhubarb and redcurrant), with bracing citrus and cherry kernel acidity, combined with firm but ripe tea-like tannins, plenty of stony minerality and a long, tangy finish. Almost Pinot-like in structure, this is good to drink now, but will also age and evolve nicely for another 3 to 5 years. |
