This is the same base wine used for the Tradition cuvée, but aged in used (1 year old) oak barrels for 7 months. And this makes for a really quite different wine: gutsy and quite firm, with definite ageing potential. Bright, semi-translucent blood red, with amber/brick hints at the rim. There's a good deal of red and black cherry and bramble fruit aromas lurking in there, currently wrapped in a soft cloak of toasty oak, with background notes of damp earth, burning incense and toasted curry spice - it certainly doesn't lack complexity. The palate is similarly packed with sweet-sour red and black fruit flavours, with a hint of richness, along with orange peel and spice notes. The tannins are still a touch firm, but there's plenty of juicy acidity to keep it all in balance. Mr. Rampon says he enjoys this wine in its relative youth, but it certainly wouldn't do any harm to give it a year or two of cellaring. Classy wine. |
