From a small plot of vines aged 50 years-plus, and produced in very small quantities. A lovely bright, translucent blood/cherry red colour, fading to a narrow rim. The nose offers a riot of fresh red currant and black berry fruit aromas, with hints of freshly baked bread, pepper, spice and forest floor. The palate is similarly fresh and full of life, with ripe redcurrant, raspberry and black cherry flavours, combined with gently rustic tannins, cracking cherry kernel acidity, a genuine streak of stony minerality, a beautifully grippy texture and a long, tangy finish. Chiroubles is one of the smaller and lesser-known of the 10 Crus of Beaujolais, but with an identity and style which sets it apart from the others. A delightful wine, best served slightly chilled. |
